Wellness is a concept that has evolved from meaning the absence of illness in the 1650s (Oxford English Dictionary, 2012), to “an integrated method of functioning, which is oriented toward maximizing the potential of which the individual is capable” (Dunn, 1961, p. 6), to “an active process through which people become aware of, and make choices toward, a more successful existence” (National Wellness Institute, n.d.).
Wellness is a varying continuum based upon factors in an individual’s life that affect health and wellbeing, and the individual working towards improving these factors and overall health and wellbeing.
